THE TRIP – Part 2

After rolling through St. Louis it was off to another 6 or 7 hours down the road.  We stopped in Joplin for dinner and to take a short break.  One’s back side get’s sore from sitting the car for most of the day…..

Joplin, MO seems like It’s still recovering from the tornado a few years ago. You can still see places where it’s apparent that there was a structure there at one time and now it’s just s slab of concrete. When we came out of the restaurant, there were a bunch of birds sitting on some power lines across the street.  It was amazing to listen to them chatter.  Every once in a while, they would all take off and fly in a clump and then separate and return to the wire.  The birds would hop side to side spreading out on the wire making room for more birds.

We overnighted in Bartlesville, Ok and then it was off to – Home of Oklahoma State for the weekend.  Rather than travel the main highway, I prefer to take the back roads.  Taking some of the old Route 66 on the way and enjoying the drive.  While you can’t quite do the interstate speeds over long distances this way – you do get to take in more of what America is about.  Small towns, stores, and unique items along the road.   Like passing place on the way to Stillwater.

Arriving in Stillwater is just like coming home for me.  It seems like such a significant portion of my life was lived there and the memories are fond.  Its great to walk around and see the things that have not changed and then discover the things that have changed.  What made this trip extra special is that I have two children, two niece’s, and a nephew all attending school at OSU.  So the chance to have dinner with them and see how they are doing was an extra bonus.  We had dinner at the local steak house and then some of sent out to go .

And then we went out for Ice Cream (well frozen yogurt) at a place called   It a self-serve kind of place, unless you get a “Concrete” which is a harder version of the yogurt (that’s what I went with).

The next morning – we went and checked out the the pre-game festivities and walking though the tailgating areas was fun.  We also walked over and checked out the newly renovated Student Union.

Road Trip

It’s been a long ride in the car this morning. we started out around 3 a.m. and have made it better than halfway so far. I always enjoy seeing the arch as we enter St. Louis.

Some would say this is where the West begins but everybody knows that Fort Worth is where the West begins.

We got to stop and take advantage of a sonic of the road and have lunch what a beautiful day.

Weekend Fun

Blue Water Bridge, Port Huron, MI

We took a ride this weekend back up to to see what was there in town.  I drive down to the bridge to see if the water had cleared up any and it had – it was much more blue than it was last week.  I’m still amazed at how swift the water runs in this part of the river.

Although we drove around town a bit we did not stop in to any of the shops.  It seemed like there was more there when we were fishing, but really we drove in and out just taking note of the building as we passed.  Sad to say that it did not pan out to do a little local shop hopping.  I would like to go back and see the Ice Museum some time.

One of the places that I thought looked really interesting was Sperry’s.  Looked like it was an old department store or something… but seems like it’s been a while since it saw customers – although it did have caroler figures on the awning.

Port Huron, MI

We drove back along the all the way down to New Baltimore before making our way west to the house.  It was a nice drive (if you like that sort of thing).

Today we made our way over to near the house and walked the which makes it way round the edge of the upper lake by the Nature Center.  It was a nice walk at just under two miles, but seemed to go by really quickly – left you wanting just a bit more.  It’s nice weather here with temperatures near 70 degrees today (but very windy).  Several folks have mentioned snow next week but I can’t really imaging it to be honest based on how warm it was today.  But like any place else, the weather can change on a dime.

CBC Radio 3

Usually I listen to in the car on the way to work; however, recently I’ve been listening to the Canadian Broadcast Company on the commute.  They seem to have nice quirky … I enjoy hearing something different.  The local radio stations seem to play the same things over and over. .

Note

Ready for Winter….

Today when I got home from fishing, I ran the mower around the yard one last time for the season (to mulch the leaves Smile) and run some more gas out of it.  Afterwards I fired up the ‘73 LeMans and pulled it out of the garage to let it run for a while.  I got the snow blower out and got it started up and made sure that it worked ok.  then put the mower on the far side of the garage and pulled the brown car back in.

I cleaned up the garage a bit… moved the bikes and camping gear to the basement.  We can actually get all three cars in, but I just can’t walk past them to get to the outside door (I’m just a wee bit too big).

Port Huron Fishing – Again

I went fishing again this morning over in .  It was a cool crisp morning about 39 degrees out with a 7 – 8 mile an hour breeze from the North West.  There was a band of dark clouds over , Canada that was moving along the shoreline coming in off Lake Huron.  We had about two hours there on the pier where we had the sun peeking in and out of the clouds.  The sun felt so good when it would pop out for a bit.

The water was really muddy (not like last week where it was turquoise blue.  Joe (my fishing buddy) got a couple of bites, but no solid hits.  We talked to a guy that caught a 20 lbs steelhead on Wednesday night where we were fishing… but no luck for use.  We did not see anyone catch anything this morning.  Right before we left, we had a snow shower that came through and it was like big wet snow flakes for about 5 min.  It was kind of neat being there fishing in those conditions!
